Amethyst
Basic Information
In its purest form Amethyst Quartz is colourless, but are most prized for its purple and golden varieties. Amethyst is a purple gemstone that was treasured by the Roman gods as a talisman to ward off the intoxicating powers of Bacchus. Amethyst is the traditional birthstone for the month of February.
Available in small and large sizes but as with all gemstones very large sizes in
rich deep colors have always been rare. Amethyst is popular among jewellery designers as a good choice for their jewellery because of its regal colour, variety of sizes and shapes, affordability and its wide tonal range from light to dark purple. Citrine in all of its glorious golden and yellow colors is Amethyst in its golden form and was believed to be be a powerful antidote to the vipers venom. Sometimes the colours of Amethyst and Citrine combines into a single gemstone we call Ametrine.
Locations Found
Amethyst Quartz can be found in abundance in just about every corner of the earth. While Brazil is the primary source of these three gemstones both Amethyst and Citrine can be found in other locales, Zambia being a significant source for Amethyst.
